What Addictions Can These Therapies Help With?
When you first think of addiction therapies you probably think they’re relevant to alcohol addiction and drug addiction. And that’s true. The therapies we offer at InnerLife Recovery have proven to be successful in treating substance use disorder and addictions to a range of drugs and alcohol. But what many don’t realise is that addiction treatment is transferable to a range of addictions in many cases.
Take cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, for example. The aim for this therapy in drug addiction treatment is to change the thought process behind the drug taking behaviours to stop the desire for drug use at its core. But why shouldn’t that also be the aim for sex addiction treatment or gambling addiction treatment? And it’s already being used successfully to treat a range of behavioural addictions.
The point is, we tackle a range of addictions at InnerLife using a tailored treatment approach – it just so happens that the therapies we are able to offer are more varied than most addiction treatment programs and centres. By having access to a range of supporting therapies, you’ll stand a greater chance of finding what works for you – regardless of if that’s drug or alcohol addiction, or completely different behavioural addictions altogether.
How Our Therapies Support You In Your Recovery
Whilst it may seem as though our range of therapies are a random selection, each one is purposefully chosen to support you in your recovery in a unique way. Here are just a few examples:
- Support groups/Group therapy: Helps you build connections with others who are also going through addiction treatment – this ensures you are held accountable in your recovery and also means you can learn from each other as you build a strong support network.
- Art therapy: Can help increase emotional control, reduce stress, and help with the treatment of mental health disorders as well as addiction.
- Cold exposure therapy: Designed to help you manage withdrawal symptoms, increase resilience and improve your physical health, cold exposure is great for those who have struggled with drug abuse and other addictions.
- Personal training: You might not assume that personal training is an important part of drug addiction therapy and other addiction treatment, but by working on your physical health and making yourself a project, you can focus on things other than your addiction and give yourself targets and goals that can be achieved both during your stay with us, and afterwards.
- Yoga classes: Yoga is an excellent mindfulness activity for helping you to get in touch with yourself. This can help you deal with the emotional symptoms of addiction, control mental health problems and help with relapse prevention after you leave our residential treatment centre.
Behavioural and drug and alcohol addiction can all be treated in different ways for different people, but often the treatment options that are offered to the public in the UK and other countries are limited to therapy and medication, with very little scope and funding for alternative therapies such as the ones we offer here.
Whilst individual therapy and medical detox can be all some people need to turn their addiction around – especially for substance abuse treatment – for others this is simply not enough to make a lasting difference.
Our approach is unique.
We focus on the whole person – not just the addiction. So, rather than concentrating only on medically removing the drug or alcohol from your system (in the case of substance addiction), and then helping you identify the root cause of your addiction and providing you with new coping skills and mechanisms to deal with the big emotions that addictions often hide (in the case of all addictions – behavioural and substance based), we look at every aspect of your life; mind, body, spirit, and work to help you transform them for the better.
Are All Your Therapies For Addiction Evidence Based?
First off, evidence based therapies for addiction are hard to define. What satisfies one person as evidence based won’t satisfy everybody.
With that said, we can say this about all of the therapies and activities we offer at InnerLife Recovery: we’ve seen each of them make a real difference to the lives of our clients and we wouldn’t remove a single one.
If our experience of them isn’t enough to satisfy your mind, though, there are countless examples of research studies that are now taking place all over the world to assess the validity and usefulness of some of these alternative therapies for addiction. In many of these studies the researchers are focussing on their effectiveness for different kinds of addictions as the single method of treatment – but results are still coming in and, for the moment, opinions remain divided.
But we’re also keen on science at InnerLife and we know the importance of offering a treatment program that actually works for the individuals who come to stay with us. That’s why we offer a holistic, multi-pronged approach. We know what works from a strictly evidence based perspective – medical detox and individual therapy – but we also know what works from a subjective perspective based on our own experience – the alternative therapies for addiction we offer.
How InnerLife Recovery Can Help You
At InnerLife Recovery you’ll get a different approach to addiction treatment and our addiction therapies might involve some you’ve never heard of before or considered. But if you’ve tried rehabilitation programmes in the past that haven’t worked, then perhaps it’s time to give our alternative approach a try?
